Naomi Watts shares the spotlight with tsunami survivor Maria at Madrid premiere of The Impossible

Naomi Watts' next film role sees the actress play Spanish tsunami survivor Maria Belon.

So it was only appropriate the two women shared the spotlight at the movie's Spanish premiere on Monday night.
Looking stunning in a white dress with ruched sleeves, Kent-born Naomi, 44, cosied up to Maria, who allowed film-makers to share her personal story of survival with the world.

Dr Belon, her husband Henry and their three sons were holidaying in Thailand when the Indian Ocean tsunami hit on December 26, 2004.
The film shows injured Maria and her oldest son - played by rising British star Tom Holland - fighting to find her husband (Ewan McGregor) and her other two sons in the disaster zone following the tsunami.

The film tells the story of how they tried to find each other and the kindness of strangers.

Also at the Spanish premiere was director Juan Antonio Bayona and young Tom, who previously starred in the West End production of Billy Elliott.
In a recent interview, Naomi admitted she found the tsunami scenes incredibly challenging to film because they were so physical.
She told Flicksandbits.com: 'I would have to say the stuff at the beginning was the hardest, physically – as I’m not Tom’s age, I’m not 25, I’m not even 30! I’m into my 40s now so it’s not normal for me to be thrust around, it was a hard thing to do – and repeatedly thrust round for a month.

'I remember being asked while filming to say this or that, and I was like, "I can’t speak! I’ve got a mouthful of water." So that was definitely the hardest. But this journey has been such an incredible experience, highs and lows.
Last month, Noami premiered the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, where the cast received a standing ovation.

The Impossible hits cinemas December 21 in the US and January 4 in the UK.
